FLOOD ALERT: BENUE ACTIVATES PREVENTIVE MEASURES, MONITORS WATER LEVELS

The Benue State Government has announced proactive steps to prevent possible flooding across the state as the rainy season intensifies.
The measures include daily monitoring of water levels to determine when residents in flood-prone communities should be evacuated to safer locations.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Odoh Ugwu, disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking with journalists in Makurdi.

The move follows a seven-day flood advisory issued by the Federal Government through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which listed Benue among states at medium risk of flooding due to rising water levels at major river monitoring stations.
Ugwu said the state government had been preparing ahead of the rainy season by ensuring that all necessary equipment for water level monitoring was available and functional.
He explained that the data gathered from the monitoring process would help authorities identify rising risks and take timely action.
The commissioner added that the government had embarked on public awareness campaigns, especially among residents of riverine communities, urging them to relocate from low-lying areas to higher grounds when necessary.
He also noted that the ongoing road construction projects in Makurdi had contributed to reducing flooding incidents, particularly in areas such as Achusa and its environs, due to the inclusion of improved drainage systems.
Ugwu appealed to residents to stop dumping refuse in waterways, warning that blocked drainage channels could worsen flooding. He added that the ministry, in collaboration with urban development authorities, was working to remove structures built on waterways to improve water flow.
