Suspected gunmen have attacked Binper community in Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, leaving more than 20 people dead and several others injured.
The attack reportedly began around midnight and continued into the early hours of Tuesday, with the assailants allegedly going from house to house and attacking residents while they slept.
The incident occurred less than a week after three people were killed amid heightened tensions between the Fulani and Mwaghavul communities, which had accused each other of setting properties ablaze.
The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, said the attackers invaded the community in large numbers and were armed with sophisticated weapons.
According to him, the gunmen reportedly forced their way into homes, opened the doors of residents who were asleep and attacked them.
Dabit said more than 20 people had been confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He added that some residents were still unaccounted for, raising concerns that the casualty figure could increase.
“The attackers in their numbers and with sophisticated weapons, moved from house to house, forcing their way in and attacking residents in their sleep,” Dabit said.
The MDA president said the community remained traumatised by the attack and called for urgent intervention to prevent further violence in the area.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident but said the command could not provide further details as security operations were still ongoing in the area.
Alabo said the police were yet to complete their assessment of the situation.
