The Jigawa State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Muhammad Baba, has cautioned corps members against cultism and other anti-social activities capable of disrupting peace and order at the orientation camp.

Baba issued the warning on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Fanisau, Dutse, the state capital.

A total of 2,000 corps members deployed to Jigawa State for the batch were administered the oath of allegiance by Justice Amina Dahiru, who represented the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

Addressing the corps members, Baba welcomed them on behalf of the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. O.O. Nafiu, and described their induction into the scheme as a new opportunity to strengthen national unity and promote the bonds that connect Nigerians.

He explained that the NYSC, established in 1973, was created to instil in young Nigerians the values of selfless service, community development and national brotherhood, regardless of cultural or social background.

According to him, the scheme has continued to pursue its objectives of promoting national integration through core values such as patriotism, integrity, efficiency, commitment and teamwork.

Baba said adherence to these values was essential to building a society free from crime and other social challenges, including youth unemployment.

He urged the corps members to maintain good conduct throughout the orientation programme and service year, stressing the need for them to serve as worthy ambassadors of the NYSC.

“There shall be zero tolerance to voice or act capable of causing distraction and disruptions of a peaceful camp life and activities. Cultism and anti-social behaviour shall be immediately and vigorously sanctioned,” he said.

The coordinator assured the corps members that camp officials were committed to being fair, firm and just, noting that their experience as youth administrators positioned them to guide and mentor the participants.

He consequently urged the corps members to respect camp officials and cooperate with them to ensure a peaceful and successful orientation exercise.

Baba also commended Governor Umar Namadi and the people of Jigawa State for their continued support for the NYSC, while appreciating the Emir of Dutse, Hameem Nuhu, for his hospitality and presence at the ceremony.

Speaking after the swearing-in, a corps member from Kaduna State, Grace Emmanuel, expressed excitement about serving in Jigawa and pledged to comply with the camp’s rules.

“I am happy to be here. I will be of good behaviour and avoid anything that will tarnish the image of NYSC. The coordinator’s warning is clear,” she said.

Another corps member, Zahra’u Inuwa, from Nasarawa State, said the orientation programme had already exposed her to the importance of discipline and unity.

“I will take the training seriously and respect camp officials. I want to use my service year to develop myself and contribute to Jigawa State,” she said.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of security agencies, senior government officials and other stakeholders, including parents and guardians of some of the corps members.
