England defender John Stones has joined Italian champions Inter Milan on a free transfer after ending his 10-year spell at Manchester City.

Inter confirmed the signing on Thursday, announcing that the 32-year-old centre-back had signed a two-year contract with the Serie A champions.

Stones became a free agent after his contract with Manchester City expired at the end of last month, following a decade of success at the Etihad Stadium.

The defender completed the move after representing England at the FIFA World Cup, where the Three Lions finished third. He featured in five matches during the tournament, earning his 94th international cap in England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina.

Stones enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career at Manchester City under former manager Pep Guardiola, helping the club win six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Champions League.

However, injuries disrupted the closing years of his time at City, limiting him to just nine Premier League appearances last season.

The experienced defender is expected to strengthen Inter’s backline as the club prepares to defend its Serie A title.

Stones could make his competitive debut for the Nerazzurri when they open their Scudetto defence against Monza at the San Siro on August 22.
