The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of security analyst and public affairs commentator, Usman Kurfi, following a petition filed by the Katsina State Government over allegations he made during a television interview.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, told journalists in Katsina on Wednesday that the arrest was based on a formal complaint submitted by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu.

According to Sadiq, the petition stemmed from claims by Kurfi alleging that the Katsina State Government sponsored bandits to participate in a pilgrimage—an allegation the state government has denied.

“Yes, we arrested him following a formal complaint by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, over his allegations that the state government sponsored bandits for pilgrimage,” the police spokesperson said.

He explained that the police carried out preliminary investigations after receiving the petition before proceeding with legal action.

“We arrested him yesterday, and today we charged him to court,” Sadiq added.

The police said Kurfi was detained based on the petition submitted by the state government through the office of the Commissioner for Internal Security, noting that the complaint centred on statements he made during a television interview.

Although the command did not disclose the specific charges filed against the analyst, it said the matter has been taken to court for adjudication.

Efforts to obtain reactions from Kurfi, his legal representatives and the Katsina State Government were unsuccessful as of the time of filing the report.
