Award-winning British actor Idris Elba has been formally knighted by King Charles III in recognition of his dedication to supporting young people and his extensive charitable work.

The honour was conferred during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, where the monarch presented one of the United Kingdom’s highest distinctions to the acclaimed actor.

Images released by the Royal Family showed the King touching a ceremonial sword to Elba’s shoulders as he knelt before receiving the knighthood. In a social media post, the Royal Family congratulated recipients of the day’s honours, highlighting Sir Idris Elba for his contributions to youth development.

Reacting to the recognition, Elba shared photographs from the ceremony on Instagram and expressed appreciation for the honour. Accompanied by a photo of himself and his wife, Sabrina Elba, at Windsor Castle, he wrote, “We are thankful. The work continues.”

Elba’s knighthood reflects years of advocacy for young people through charitable programmes and community initiatives. He serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust, an organisation he credits with helping him begin his career after receiving financial support from it at age 18.

The recognition was initially announced in King Charles III’s 2026 New Year Honours list before being formally awarded at Tuesday’s ceremony.

Speaking earlier this year, Elba described the honour as deeply meaningful, particularly because it acknowledged his efforts to amplify the voices and challenges of young people. He said the recognition was a source of pride for both him and his family.

In 2022, Elba and his wife established the Elba Hope Foundation to create opportunities for young people and support diaspora communities. The actor recently joined King Charles at a Buckingham Palace garden party celebrating the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust, where the pair entertained guests with a surprise appearance behind the DJ booth.

Investiture ceremonies are regularly conducted by King Charles, Princess Anne and Prince William to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to society through public service, philanthropy, the arts and other fields.
