Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid responded to their surprise defeat to Real Betis with a commanding 4-1 victory over city rivals Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday.
The victory took Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table and secured their fourth win in five league games this season.
Mbappé put the hosts ahead in the 14th minute after Álvaro Carreras was brought down inside the penalty area. The French striker confidently converted the spot-kick, sending Rayo goalkeeper Emil Audero the wrong way.
Madrid extended their lead just three minutes later, with Mbappé turning provider. The forward delivered a precise pass to Carreras, who finished decisively to make it 2-0.
Jude Bellingham then added a third 10 minutes before half-time. The England international finished off a flowing attacking move by side-footing Vinicius Jr’s cut-back into the net.
Mbappe came close to adding another before the break, but his powerful effort struck the woodwork in first-half stoppage time.
Rayo responded early in the second half when Sergio Camello pulled a goal back, giving the visitors hope of mounting a comeback.
Madrid maintained control of the game and completed the victory in stoppage time when Mbappé collected the ball before unleashing a low and powerful strike into the far corner to complete his brace.
The result further strengthened Real Madrid’s impressive home record against Rayo Vallecano, with the capital club now having won 14 of their last 15 home meetings with their city rivals.
Barcelona have the opportunity to restore a three-point lead at the top of La Liga when they take on Levante on Sunday.
For Madrid, the convincing victory represents a strong response to their defeat against Real Betis and keeps them firmly in contention in the early stages of the title race.
