Liverpool secured a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 21st minute before Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s advantage nine minutes after the restart.
Tottenham pulled one back through Conor Gallagher in the 69th minute, setting up a tense finish as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
Giorgi Mamardashvili produced a crucial save in the 86th minute to deny Omar Marmoush and preserve Liverpool’s lead.
However, Dominik Szoboszlai put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time with a stunning long-range strike, sealing Liverpool’s progress to the next round.
The victory also ended Tottenham’s hopes of advancing in the competition, although Gallagher’s goal gave them their first goal of the campaign against top-flight opposition.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola praised Szoboszlai’s late effort, describing it as a “worldie”, while highlighting the quality of the team’s three goals.
The match also saw Liverpool make 10 changes to the side that featured against Fulham on Saturday, with Lewis Koumas earning praise for his energetic display and Trey Nyoni impressing in midfield.
