Calamity befell the Amakpu Okuku community in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Friday morning when a man in his fifties, known simply as Odomma, was found deceased after reportedly taking his own life.

Community members indicated that the father of four, who sold water in containers, had long been grappling with economic hardships that rendered him unable to support himself and his family.

His remains were discovered hanging in an incomplete structure near his home as residents departed for their daily routines.

As per the accounts of local inhabitants, Odomma had previously threatened to end his life approximately three months ago, expressing dissatisfaction that his wife and children had allegedly ceased providing him with food due to his inability to sustain the family.

A community member, who simply identified as Ikenna, told our correspondent that the deceased had shared his frustrations with a few friends.

“He said if the situation continued, he would take his life to end the misery

“We recommended that he bring the issue to the village leader for resolution. Unfortunately, he opted for this course of action. Look at how this individual concluded his life over financial distress. He could have sold his generator or GP tank to obtain sustenance, yet he chose to end his life. Now, others will come together to share a meal, and he will be excluded from it,” Ikenna stated.

Eyewitnesses said tens of residents rushed to the scene after hearing the news, crowding the uncompleted building to catch a glimpse of the lifeless body and filming with their phones.

Odomma, who was widely patronised in the community for water sales priced from ₦100 upwards, was described as hardworking but visibly depressed in recent months.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, Henry Okoye, said he would verify the incident with the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri West.

“Please give me some minutes to call and confirm from the DPO of Owerri West Local Government Area. I will get back to you shortly,” he said. However, subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful as his phone remained unreachable.
