A 53-year-old resident of Meiran, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for indiscriminately dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall.

Monday was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was found dumping waste in a drain in the Meiran area of Lagos.

She was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the environmental offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.

The Authority said such acts constitute environmental offences and attract sanctions under the law.

LAWMA added that it would continue to collaborate with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.

It urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and use approved waste disposal channels to help maintain a cleaner environment and prevent the blockage of drainage channels.
