Facebook and Instagram owner Meta has agreed to introduce measures restricting teenagers’ use of its platforms at night and limiting their default daily usage to two hours across its family of apps.

Under the new measures, teens will be prevented from accessing Meta’s apps during designated nighttime hours, while their combined daily usage will be capped at two hours by default.

The measures are contained in a $16.7 billion settlement reached with US states over allegations that Meta intentionally designed its platforms to keep young users engaged, misled the public about potential risks and illegally collected personal data from children below the age of 13.

The settlement marks a major development in efforts by US authorities to address concerns over the impact of social media platforms on children and teenagers.
