NANS CONFIRMS MULTIPLE NELFUND PAYMENTS, ADVISES BENEFICIARIES AGAINST SPENDING EXCESS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has disclosed that some beneficiaries of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) reportedly received their June and July upkeep allowances twice, shortly after the fund began disbursing outstanding payments.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, revealed the development in a post on X on Friday, attributing the duplicate payments to an alleged technical glitch on the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIP) payment platform.
He advised students who received the allowances twice to keep the extra funds, noting that the excess payments could be treated as advance disbursements for future upkeep allowances.
“To those of you who got NELFUND June & July twice, it was a glitch caused by the NIP payment platform. NELFUND is not Father Christmas, so save the money very well, as that may be your next two months’ upkeep payment,” he wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, NELFUND had not issued an official statement confirming the duplicate payments or clarifying whether beneficiaries would be required to refund the excess funds or have them deducted from subsequent allowances.
The development follows the commencement of June and July upkeep allowance payments to eligible students under the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
NANS had earlier confirmed that the disbursement process was underway, while several beneficiaries shared screenshots of successful payment alerts on X.
Announcing the commencement of the payments, Babatunde assured students that all outstanding upkeep allowances would be cleared.
“The payment of June and July NELFUND upkeep allowances has officially commenced. As I assured you, every outstanding backlog will be paid. We remain committed to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian student is left behind,” he said.
He also appealed to beneficiaries who had yet to receive their allowances to remain patient, explaining that the payments were being processed in batches.
“To all beneficiaries, I urge you to remain patient. If you have not received yours yet, kindly stay calm, as disbursements are being made in batches. We remain committed to protecting the welfare and interests of Nigerian students,” he added.
The latest development comes after weeks of complaints from students over delays in the payment of monthly upkeep allowances under the NELFUND scheme.
The NELFUND upkeep programme provides eligible tertiary institution students with monthly financial support, while tuition fees are paid directly to their institutions.
Although many students have confirmed receiving their June and July allowances, NELFUND has yet to officially address the reported duplicate payments or the alleged payment platform glitch.
