NASARAWA VARSITY MAKING PROGRESS AGAINST INSECURITY — VC

The management of the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, says it has made significant progress in addressing kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities in Mararaba and Akunza communities, where many of its students reside.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, disclosed this on Monday during an interaction with journalists at the university’s conference hall in Lafia.
Kida attributed the progress to sustained collaboration between the institution and security agencies in the state, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the military.
“We partnered with the security agencies, including the Police, DSS, Civil Defence and the military, to address the recurring cases of insecurity bedevilling communities around the university,” he said.
He added that the university had engaged more than 200 hunters, vigilantes and other volunteers to support security agencies through intelligence gathering and other security-related activities.
According to him, the initiative has contributed significantly to addressing security challenges around the university community.
Kida also appealed to journalists in Nasarawa State to support the institution’s efforts by helping to expose individuals involved in kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities.
“I am soliciting support from the media in our struggle and fight against this incessant security menace bedevilling communities around the university,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the safety of students and staff remained a priority, noting that the university had engaged with communities where students live to strengthen security arrangements.
He disclosed that more than 150 vigilantes had been placed on the university’s payroll, alongside nearly 50 hunters and other volunteers involved in supporting security operations.
“In the school and within the school community, we have on our payroll over 200 supporters in security matters, and we are also giving them stipends. They are not really enough, but they are seriously doing that magic for us,” Kida said.
