Nine people have died in a road crash along the Ijebu-Ode/Ore axis of the Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident occurred at about 4:55pm on Monday around the Bethel area of the expressway and involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B-299DT, operated by Delta Line, and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle with registration number AAB162XD, belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Monday.

Odunsi-Oyewole said all nine people involved in the crash, comprising three males and six females, died in the accident.

He said the crash occurred during rainfall when the road surface was wet, adding that preliminary investigations identified speed violation as the probable cause.

“The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the report, arriving at 1658hrs,” he said.

According to him, the bodies of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles involved were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise extreme caution while driving during rainfall.

He advised motorists to obey prescribed speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid any form of reckless driving that could endanger other road users.

Ogunjobi also warned that speeding becomes more dangerous on wet roads because reduced tyre grip and visibility can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles or stop safely.

The FRSC commiserated with the families of the victims and urged motorists and other road users to make safety a priority at all times.

The latest crash comes days after another road accident along the Coastal Road inward Eko Hotel in Lagos claimed one life and left three others seriously injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the injured victims were rescued from the scene, while details surrounding the cause of the accident were yet to be established.
