The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspected gun-runner and recovered two AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 42 rounds of live ammunition from a commercial vehicle in Ilorin.
The suspect, identified as Umaru M., was arrested during a stop-and-search operation conducted by police operatives along the Alapa–Okolowo axis of the state capital.
According to the command, the weapons and ammunition were concealed in a bag found inside the vehicle.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the suspect initially denied ownership of the bag containing the firearms.
However, she said further investigation reportedly led to Umaru admitting that he was transporting the weapons and ammunition.
The police said the suspect also provided information linking the recovered firearms to another alleged member of a gun-running network identified as Dan Yarubawa.
“Dan Yarubawa allegedly gave him the firearms for onward delivery to another individual, Dahiru, outside Kwara State,” the statement said.
The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other individuals allegedly connected to the suspected gun-running operation.
It added that the investigation would also seek to uncover the full extent of the alleged network and identify other persons involved.
The police said the recovery was part of its intelligence-led and proactive operations aimed at preventing criminal activities and strengthening security across the state.
Commenting on the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Kwara State.
Adekimi urged residents to provide the police with timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing and combating crime.
He assured residents that the command would maintain its vigilance and sustain operations aimed at identifying and disrupting threats to public safety across the state.
