Lionel Messi has acquired Spanish second-tier club CD Eldense, marking his second club ownership venture in Spain this year.

Eldense announced the development on Thursday, confirming that the Argentine superstar had acquired the club from its previous majority shareholder, a Colombian investment group. The transaction remains subject to the required approval from Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD).

The acquisition adds Eldense to Messi’s growing football investment portfolio. The former Barcelona and Argentina captain previously acquired Spanish lower-league club UE Cornellà in April, making Eldense his second Spanish club.

Eldense, founded in 1921, currently competes in Spain’s second division. The club said Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a long-term project focused on its sporting, institutional and social development.

“CD Eldense officially announces the acquisition of the club by Leo Messi, marking the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in the institution’s more than 100-year history.

“The arrival of one of the most important figures in the history of sport as owner of CD Eldense in Spanish professional football marks the beginning of a long-term project aimed at promoting the sporting, institutional and social development of CD Eldense.

“Founded in 1921, CD Eldense enters this new chapter with the ambition of consolidating its position and growing in professional football, while also showcasing its roots, history and blue-and-red identity.

“The transaction is pending the required authorization from the CSD under the terms established by the Sports Law,” CD Eldense added.

Messi, who continues to play for Inter Miami, becomes the majority owner of a second Spanish club in 2026 following his acquisition of Cornellà.
