Yunusa Tanko has accepted his appointment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tanko announced the development in a statement posted on his X account, saying his new assignment would focus on political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across Northern Nigeria.

He said the appointment followed his two-year tenure as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, during which he said the group established structures across the country.

“With deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose, I write to formally accept my new assignment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi,” Tanko said.

He said his new role would involve working with the movement’s structures, stakeholders, communities and supporters across the region.

Tanko also announced that Dr Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr Mo, would succeed him as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.

He said the change was necessary because the new assignment would require his “full attention and presence across Northern Nigeria.”

“Dr Mo has been part of the Movement’s journey from the start. He has shown commitment to civic engagement, grassroots mobilisation, communication and the broader struggle for a New Nigeria,” Tanko said.

Tanko said he had confidence in Paul’s ability to provide the national coordination with the attention and inclusiveness required as the 2027 elections approach.

He urged leaders, coordinators and volunteers of the movement to support the new national coordinator.

Reflecting on his tenure, Tanko said the movement established a National Advisory Council and developed regional and grassroots coordination structures.

He also listed the development of its online mobilisation platform, Obidient.com, and an election-results monitoring system linked to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s results-viewing platform among the initiatives undertaken during his tenure.

Tanko thanked Obi, leaders, volunteers, coordinators and supporters of the movement for their support during his tenure.

He said the structures developed over the past two years would provide a foundation for his new work in Northern Nigeria.
