ORJI KALU VOWS TO QUIT APC IF TINUBU DISRESPECTS CATHOLIC CHURCH

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he would leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu ever disrespected the opposition or the Catholic Church.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, the senator representing Abia North defended Tinubu amid the controversy surrounding his meeting with Catholic bishops, insisting the President neither insulted the clergy nor owed them an apology.
Kalu described Tinubu as a longstanding friend of the Catholic Church, saying the President has always maintained a cordial relationship with its leadership. He added that there was nothing wrong with the bishops expressing their concerns directly to the President.
The former Abia State governor, however, argued that comments made by John Cardinal Onaiyekan after the meeting reflected his personal views and should not be taken as the official position of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). He noted that the conference’s official communiqué was presented by its president, while individual bishops and cardinals remain entitled to express their personal opinions.
The controversy followed Cardinal Onaiyekan’s remarks that the bishops told President Tinubu Nigeria was “bleeding” under worsening economic hardship, while the President reportedly disagreed with their assessment of the country’s economy.
