OSUN POLL: GOVERNOR MAKINDE SAYS RULE OF LAW MUST PREVAIL OVER POLITICS

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has condemned what he described as the growing use of federal institutions to undermine governance in opposition-controlled states, warning that such actions weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.
Makinde said while no government should be exempt from scrutiny, deploying agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to selectively target certain states or public officials creates the impression of politically motivated investigations and erodes public trust.
He argued that the reported freezing of an official Osun State Government account without due legal process exceeds the EFCC’s statutory powers, adding that the timing of the action raises concerns about an attempt to influence the August 15 governorship election in the state.
The governor stressed that federal institutions must uphold their constitutional responsibilities by acting fairly, professionally and without political bias. He called on Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community to remain vigilant, insisting that democracy cannot flourish where public institutions are perceived as tools of political intimidation.
Makinde maintained that safeguarding the independence and credibility of state institutions is essential to preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that the rule of law must always take precedence over political interests.
