The Oyo State Police Command has rescued a 15-year-old kidnapping victim, identified as Sumaila Muhammadu, and neutralised a suspected kidnapper during a security operation along the Awe–Iwo Road axis of the state.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Sunday, saying the operation followed credible intelligence received on October 22, 2026.

According to the statement, the intelligence indicated that suspected kidnappers were demanding ransom for the release of the teenager, who was abducted from the Onidundun area of Akinyele Local Government Area on October 18.

Ayanlade said the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, subsequently directed operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Section, working with the Oyo Zone Vigilante Group of Nigeria, to move against the suspects and secure the victim’s release.

The operatives reportedly mobilised to the Pipeline, Ajagba axis along the Awe–Iwo Road, where they advanced on the suspects’ location.

The statement said a gun duel broke out at about 9:30 p.m. after the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the advancing security team.

Despite the attack, the operatives rescued Muhammadu, while one suspected kidnapper was neutralised. Other members of the gang reportedly fled in different directions with suspected gunshot injuries.

The police said the neutralised suspect was taken to a hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead, before his remains were deposited at a morgue.

Items recovered during the operation included an Android mobile phone and a cutlass, which the command said would form part of the ongoing investigation.

The police urged residents, particularly those living around the Awe–Iwo Road axis and neighbouring communities, to remain vigilant and report anyone suspected of seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds.

Medical practitioners, hospital administrators and other healthcare workers were also urged to notify the police of individuals presenting with gunshot injuries potentially linked to the incident.

The command assured the public that credible information would assist efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further criminal activities.

Ayanlade reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence-led operations and collaboration with relevant security stakeholders.

The Commissioner of Police also called on residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve security across the state.
