PETER OBI URGES UNN TO PUBLISH HIS ACADEMIC RECORDS

The 2027 presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to release his academic records following reports of a legal action seeking Certified True Copies of his university certificates and other admission documents.

Obi, in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, said he had no objection to the release of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which he said he obtained from the university in 1984, alongside other records relating to his admission and studies.

His statement followed reports circulating on social media about a legal action by an individual or group seeking CTCs of his degree certificate and other academic credentials.

Obi said he had nothing to hide and urged the university to make his records available whenever there was a legitimate request, subject to applicable laws.

“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records,” he said.

He further asked the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to provide his academic certificates, records and other official documents relating to his admission and studies whenever legitimately requested and within the limits permitted by law.

Obi also stated that he had no objection to other educational institutions he attended, both within and outside Nigeria, releasing his academic records in accordance with established laws and procedures.

The former Anambra State governor said transparency and accountability were particularly important for individuals seeking public office, while stressing that public scrutiny should be conducted fairly and within the law.

“I believe strongly in transparency and accountability, particularly for those who seek the privilege of public office. Public scrutiny must, however, be fair, lawful, and applied consistently to everyone who seeks to lead our nation,” he said.

Obi said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record as he seeks the presidency in 2027, adding that he was prepared to undergo the level of scrutiny expected of anyone seeking the nation’s highest office.

He also challenged other presidential aspirants to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate public scrutiny.

According to him, such scrutiny should not be considered an attack but rather an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability and rebuild Nigerians’ trust in political leaders.

Obi said leadership should embody values such as transparency, integrity, accountability and respect for institutions.

He added that those seeking the trust of Nigerians must be willing to demonstrate openness and accountability.
