POLICE ARREST SUSPECT OVER VANDALISM OF SIX TCN TRANSMISSION TOWERS

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the vandalism of six transmission towers along the Yola-Jalingo 330kV transmission line, with the Nigeria Police Force arresting a key suspect linked to the incident.
According to TCN, the affected towers—T995, T998, T999, T1002, T1003 and T1004—were found to have been vandalised during a routine patrol by its engineers on July 29, 2026.
The company said the vandals removed critical bracing components and carted away about 130 tower parts, raising concerns over the structural stability of the affected transmission towers.
Following the discovery, TCN collaborated with the Nigeria Police Force on July 30 to conduct a joint operation within the host community, engaging local leaders and youth representatives to assist in identifying those responsible for the crime.
In a statement shared on its official X account, the company disclosed that police informed it on August 1 that a principal suspect had been arrested and that some of the stolen transmission tower materials had been recovered.
TCN said its officials subsequently inspected the recovered items and called for the suspect to be prosecuted to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
The company added that investigators have obtained useful information from the suspect and are continuing efforts to track down other members of the alleged vandalism syndicate.
Describing the repeated destruction of electricity infrastructure as a serious threat to the national grid and investments in the power sector, TCN urged communities to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around transmission facilities to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.
The company stressed that safeguarding critical power infrastructure requires the collective support of host communities and the public to ensure reliable electricity transmission across the country.
