Spanish giants Real Madrid have confirmed that Austrian defender David Alaba will leave the club at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract.

The 33-year-old centre-back will depart the Santiago Bernabéu after a five-year spell in Madrid, having joined the club from Bayern Munich in 2021.

During his time with Los Blancos, Alaba won 11 major trophies, including two UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns, while making 131 appearances for the club.

In a statement released on Friday, Real Madrid praised the Austrian international for his contributions during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude and all its affection to a player who has been part of a team that has marked one of the most successful periods in our history,” the club said.

Alaba is expected to bid farewell to supporters during Real Madrid’s final La Liga match of the season against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. Right-back Dani Carvajal and departing coach Alvaro Arbeloa are also set to be honoured by fans.

The defender’s future destination remains unknown, although he is expected to captain Austria at the FIFA World Cup later this summer.
