The Acting Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Abdulrahman Mohammed, has advised residents living near water channels to relocate to safer areas as rainfall intensifies across Abuja.
The warning followed a flash flood recorded in the early hours of Friday at a one-storey building located at 22 Anthony Ikem Street, behind Blue Cabana Hotel in Mabushi District.
In a statement by the Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, FEMD said heavy overnight rainfall caused water to overflow into the building, affecting the ground floor.
The agency noted that it received a distress call around 3:00 a.m. and immediately deployed its Search and Rescue Team to the scene to assess and respond to the situation.
According to FEMD, both apartments on the lower floor were submerged up to window level, while responders had to manually evacuate water after a pumping generator failed.
Although no lives were lost, residents reportedly suffered damage to household items, food supplies, and important documents.
The Acting DG, Abdulrahman Mohammed, reiterated the call for people residing near water channels to relocate as the rainy season peaks.
He also urged the clearing of blocked drains and removal of structures built on waterways to reduce flood risks.
FEMD further warned that Abuja has continued to experience recurring flash floods in recent years, particularly during peak rainfall periods, largely due to blocked drainage systems, rapid urban development, and construction near natural waterways.
The agency stressed that these conditions are increasing the vulnerability of low-lying communities and called for urgent preventive measures as rains persist.
