REPS URGE FG TO RENAME TARABA FEDERAL VARSITY AFTER TY DANJUMA

BY JENN NOMAMIUKOR
The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to change the name of Federal University, Wukari, in Taraba State, to honor a former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), for his work in helping the country develop.
This decision came after a motion was passed during a plenary meeting on Wednesday, proposed by Gaza Gbefwi, Mark Useni, and Ayuba Dampar.
Gbefwi led the discussion on the motion and talked about Danjuma’s important work in Nigeria through his military and public service, his charitable efforts, and his support for education, healthcare, and communities in need.
He said, “The House recognises that naming the university after him would honour his contributions to national development and preserve a legacy of service for future generations.”
Consequently, the House, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, urged the Federal Government to rename the institution TY Danjuma Federal University, Wukari (TYDFUW), subject to the necessary amendment of its enabling Act.
It also required the House Committee on University Education to work with important people involved and help carry out the laws needed to make the proposed name change happen.
Set up in 2011, the Federal University, Wukari, is one of Nigeria’s federal universities created to make more people able to go to university, encourage research, and help the country grow.
Danjuma, a retired general and indigene of Taraba State served as Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 and later as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003. Beyond his military and political career, he has been involved in philanthropic activities, particularly through the TY Danjuma Foundation, which supports initiatives in health, education and community development.
The proposed renaming is, however, subject to the completion of the required legislative and administrative processes before it can take effect.
