A security guard identified simply as Godwin has been killed in a suspected cult attack in the Abule Ijesha area of Yaba, Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, sending residents into panic as gunshots echoed through the neighbourhood.
According to a police source, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to comment on the matter, the attackers arrived in a vehicle, confronted the victim near his duty post, shot him in the head, and allegedly attacked him further with an axe.
The source said the assailants fired several shots into the air before fleeing the scene, causing fear among residents and passersby.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
Meanwhile, anti-cultism platform Naija Confra claimed that three other people sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
The platform alleged that the attackers arrived in a white Mercedes-Benz, shot the victim, and inflicted further injuries with an axe. It also claimed the gunmen fired indiscriminately, leaving three women with bullet wounds, although it was unclear whether any additional fatalities occurred.
The Lagos State Police Command has yet to confirm the reported injuries or any additional casualties linked to the incident.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered and a text message had not been replied to at the time of filing the report.
