Shettima Defends Tinubu’s Reforms, Cites Rise in Foreign Reserves
Vice President Kashim Shettima has defended the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying they deserve commendation rather than criticism for improving the country’s economic outlook.
Speaking on Monday at the Delta Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba, Shettima praised Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the Federal Government’s reform agenda and helping Nigerians understand the economic challenges inherited by the current administration.
The Vice President said Nigeria’s foreign reserves had grown significantly, rising from about $3 billion to approximately $52 billion, attributing the increase to the government’s economic reforms and improved investor confidence despite global economic uncertainties.
He noted that the country had moved from experiencing capital flight and scarcity to attracting capital inflows, insisting that the President should be applauded for the progress made.
Shettima also commended Soludo for his political stance during the 2023 elections, describing the Anambra governor as someone who stood by his convictions despite prevailing opposition.
He further observed that the increasing number of investment summits across states reflected healthy competition among sub-national governments, adding that improved revenue allocation had strengthened the capacity of states to attract investments.
Also speaking at the summit, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori announced that his administration had set aside $100 million as viability gap funding to reduce investment risks and encourage new investments in the state.
The governor also disclosed that more than 12,000 hectares of farmland had been earmarked for agricultural development, highlighting investment opportunities across cassava, oil palm, rice, potato and other cash crop value chains.
Oborevwori added that Delta State’s coastline provides significant potential for the development of a thriving marine economy.
The Delta Economic and Investment Summit is designed to promote economic transformation by boosting investor confidence, fostering strategic partnerships and attracting both local and foreign investments.
