TikToker Undergoes Traditional Cleansing After Filming Oloolu Procession
A female TikTok user has undergone traditional cleansing rites after allegedly recording a procession linked to the annual Oloolu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident, which has attracted widespread attention on social media, followed the circulation of videos showing the woman participating in traditional cleansing rituals at the Oloolu compound.
Speaking on the development, the spokesperson to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Adeola Oloko, clarified that the woman did not film the sacred Oloolu masquerade itself but mistakenly recorded Alawo Oloolu, a figure associated with the Oloolu tradition, while the procession passed through parts of Ibadan.
According to Oloko, the woman reportedly experienced health challenges after uploading the video, prompting her family to seek assistance from the traditional custodians, who carried out the prescribed rites in line with local customs.
He reiterated that women are traditionally prohibited from viewing certain aspects of the Oloolu procession and urged residents to respect the cultural restrictions.
Oloko, however, said he could not confirm claims circulating online that the woman disguised herself as a man to record the procession.
Videos shared online showed the content creator with a shaved head, dressed in red attire and participating in traditional rites, while reports claimed items including giant African snails, a ram and a goat formed part of the cleansing ritual.
Meanwhile, Ibadan-based content creator Ayo Adams said officials at the Oloolu compound confirmed that the woman was alive, had completed the required rites and was recovering with her family.
The Oyo State Police Command said it had no official report of the incident.
The annual Oloolu Festival, celebrated by descendants of the Oloolu lineage, is one of Ibadan’s prominent traditional festivals and is governed by customs that prohibit the photographing or recording of certain aspects of its sacred procession.
