The 2026 FIFA World Cup will culminate in a blockbuster final on Sunday as Spain face defending champions Argentina at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

The two football giants secured their places in the final after overcoming tough opposition in the semi-finals, setting up a clash that promises to be one of the most anticipated in recent World Cup history.

Spain became the first team to book a place in the final after defeating France 2-0 in Dallas, while Argentina followed 24 hours later with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over England to move within one win of retaining the World Cup title.

The final is also expected to produce one of football’s most compelling storylines as Argentina captain Lionel Messi comes up against Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, for the first time in a senior international match.

Their meeting has attracted global attention following the resurfacing of a photograph taken nearly two decades ago during a UNICEF charity calendar shoot organised by Diario Sport, in which Messi was pictured holding and bathing the then-infant Yamal. The image went viral during Euro 2024 after it was shared by Yamal’s father on social media.

Spain head into the final in impressive form after winning six consecutive matches following a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opening group game.

La Roja defeated Austria 3-0 in the round of 32 before edging Portugal 1-0 in the last 16. They went on to beat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals and capped their run with a commanding 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals.

Spain have conceded just one goal throughout the tournament.

Argentina’s route to the final has been considerably more demanding.

Lionel Scaloni’s side progressed from the group stage with victories over Algeria, Austria and Jordan before surviving a series of gruelling knockout encounters.

The defending champions required extra time to eliminate Cape Verde in the round of 32, Egypt in the last 16 and Switzerland in the quarter-finals before overcoming England 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Sunday’s showdown offers Argentina the chance to successfully defend the World Cup title, while Spain will be aiming to cap an outstanding campaign by lifting football’s biggest trophy.
