TEGBE: POWER SECTOR FRAGMENTATION HINDERING RAPID ELECTRIFICATION

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has said poor coordination within Nigeria’s power sector has slowed the delivery of reliable electricity to Nigerians.

Tegbe made this known on Monday in Abuja during the announcement of the Off-Grid Stakeholder Coordination initiative.

The minister, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Adelabu, said the fragmentation of the power sector remained a major obstacle to achieving rapid electrification across the country.

“Fragmentation is the quiet tax every under-coordinated sector pays: in duplicated effort, missed investment opportunities, and slower delivery of power to the Nigerians who need it most,” he said.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, stressed the need for a centralised platform to enable stakeholders to identify existing projects and allocate resources more efficiently.

Aliyu said the continued expansion of Nigeria’s off-grid energy sector in terms of investment, scale and institutional participation made it necessary to establish an Off-Grid Sector Coordination Secretariat.

According to him, the secretariat would provide a structured platform for better coordination among government institutions, development partners, private-sector operators and other stakeholders.
