TINUBU ORDERS COMPREHENSIVE REFORM OF NIGERIAN FOOTBALL

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to address the country’s repeated failure to qualify for major regional, continental and global competitions.
The President directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat and other key stakeholders to maintain continuity in critical football administration while overseeing a broad and inclusive reform process.
This was disclosed on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement titled, ‘President Tinubu Directs Comprehensive Football Reform.’

Tinubu said the reform was necessary because of persistent structural weaknesses in Nigerian football despite the sport’s huge popularity, public support and national attention.
He said the process would focus on strengthening governance, administration, stakeholder representation, talent development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability.
According to the President, the struggles facing Nigerian football stem largely from weaknesses within the system rather than a shortage of talent or resources.
“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” he said.
Tinubu stressed that the country’s football system must be restructured to match Nigeria’s abundance of talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and consistent performance.
He described the reform as an urgent intervention rather than a routine administrative exercise.
The process will also involve appropriate consultations with FIFA and CAF while ensuring that Nigeria continues to meet its obligations under the international football governance framework.
The President urged football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the reform and work collectively towards building a stronger, more transparent and successful football system.
The directive follows a challenging period for Nigerian football, including recent struggles by the Super Eagles in World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualification, as well as persistent governance disputes within the Nigeria Football Federation.
