Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has spoken about President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, recalling that he first knew the president through his father, the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Kuti’s remarks have sparked discussions about Tinubu’s role in the struggle for democracy, particularly during the military era.
A supporter of Tinubu, reacting to Kuti’s statement, described the president a⁸s a close associate of the late business mogul and politician, Moshood Abiola, who was at the forefront of Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle.
The supporter also credited Tinubu with taking legal action against the Ernest Shonekan-led Interim National Government and challenging the decree that established the administration.
The supporter further cited the legal battle that followed the removal of former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja from office in 2006, claiming that Tinubu helped facilitate the legal challenge that eventually led to Ladoja’s reinstatement.
According to the supporter, Tinubu’s alleged contributions to the struggle for democracy remain a major reason for his continued support for the president.
The supporter also contrasted Tinubu’s democratic credentials with those of another political figure, accusing the individual of having worked with the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, and failing to conduct local government elections during a seven-year period.
The comments have reignited conversations about the political histories of Nigeria’s leaders and their respective contributions to the country’s democratic development.
