President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the newly inaugurated President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
According to a brief statement issued by the Presidency, the visit marked Wadagni’s first bilateral engagement with the Nigerian leader since assuming office a week ago.
The Beninese President was welcomed on arrival by Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to Tinubu’s residence for a closed-door meeting that lasted approximately 30 minutes.
Details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed.
Wadagni was inaugurated on May 24, 2026, succeeding Patrice Talon following his victory in the April 12 presidential election. Nigeria was represented at the inauguration by Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Tinubu.
The visit underscores the longstanding ties between Nigeria and Benin, which share a common border and maintain close cooperation in trade, security and regional integration through Economic Community of West African States.
Tinubu previously served as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government from 2023 to 2024, playing a key role in regional diplomacy and security initiatives across West Africa.
The meeting is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, particularly in areas of trade, security and regional development.
