OGUN MOB DETAIN TWO MOBILE POLICE OFFICERS MISTAKEN FOR KIDNAPPERS, POLICE CONFIRM
A tragedy was averted in the Kanuyi community of Simawa, Ogun State, after an agitated mob detained two serving mobile police officers who were mistakenly identified as kidnappers.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
According to the statement, the officers—attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State—were returning from an official assignment in Sagamu when they lost their way and were wrongly profiled by residents.
The Command said members of the community, suspecting them to be criminals, surrounded the officers, searched them, and recorded videos of the encounter, which were later circulated on social media with misleading captions.
“The clarification became necessary following information received by the Simawa Division on 1st June 2026 at about 11:00 a.m. that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by members of the community,” the statement said.
It added that police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where the officers were rescued from the mob and taken into protective custody for proper identification and investigation.
Before police intervention, the officers had reportedly been searched, filmed, and publicly labelled as suspects by residents.
The Command noted that while the officers escaped physical harm, they were subjected to unnecessary suspicion and emotional distress despite being law enforcement personnel on official duty.
Preliminary findings indicated that the officers had been deployed to Sagamu on national assignment before losing their way while returning to their base.
The police urged residents to avoid mob action and verify suspicious situations through proper channels before taking action.
