The decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to extend the tenure of the Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, has generated mixed reactions among stakeholders in the library and education sectors.

President Tinubu recently approved a final five-year tenure extension for Professor Anunobi, a move that has attracted both commendation and criticism from various interest groups.

Among those who welcomed the decision is Shehu Mustapha, National Coordinator of the Coalition of Young Nigerian Librarians, who described the extension as a step that would guarantee continuity in the implementation of key reforms within the institution.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Mustapha said the tenure extension would support the completion of ongoing projects, including the National Library Headquarters project, and facilitate the successful execution of the institution’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.

He praised Professor Anunobi’s leadership, describing her as a reform-minded administrator who has overseen significant institutional transformation since her appointment in 2021.

According to him, some of the achievements recorded under her leadership include the development and operationalisation of the National Repository of Nigeria, the Newspaper and Magazine Locator, the Index and Abstract to Nigerian Newspapers, and the National Virtual Library of Nigeria.

Mustapha further stressed the need for focused and visionary leadership in Nigeria’s literary and education sectors, noting that continuity in administration would help sustain ongoing reforms and strengthen national knowledge infrastructure.

However, the tenure extension has also drawn criticism from some stakeholders, who have expressed reservations over the decision, highlighting differing views on the future direction of the National Library.

The development continues to generate debate within professional and academic circles over leadership, institutional reforms and succession planning at the National Library of Nigeria.
