Troops of the 12 Brigade under the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army have foiled a planned kidnap operation and neutralised a suspected terrorist during an ambush operation in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to the military, the operation was carried out on May 30, 2026, following credible intelligence indicating that armed criminals were planning to carry out kidnapping activities in Jakura II Community.
Acting on the intelligence, troops were deployed to a suspected crossing point used by the criminals along the Old Obajana–Tajimi Road, where an ambush was strategically laid to disrupt their movement and prevent the planned attack.
During the operation, the troops reportedly engaged the suspects in a firefight, resulting in the death of one suspected terrorist, while others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds.
The Army said a follow-up exploitation of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, five magazines, 70 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one bandolier and mobile phones.
Military authorities noted that the recovered items further confirmed the involvement of the criminal group in kidnapping activities within the area.
The Army described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of criminality threatening the safety of residents.
It added that troops have continued combing the area to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, commended the troops for their vigilance, professionalism and combat effectiveness.
He reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorists and criminal elements, while urging residents to continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies to support ongoing security operations.
