Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez for a reported £7.5 million.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on X on Thursday, stating that the two clubs had reached an agreement for the permanent transfer, with Martínez also giving his approval to the move.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper became available after Aston Villa signed Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma as their long-term first-choice goalkeeper.

Chelsea’s decision to pursue Martínez comes after concerns over Robert Sánchez’s performance in the club’s Premier League victory over Fulham, where errors from the Spanish goalkeeper contributed to Fulham’s goals.
Martínez has been training separately from Villa’s first team and was excluded from their squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Brighton.
The Argentina international joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 and has since established himself as one of the club’s leading players. He played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and helped Villa win the Europa League last season.
The proposed transfer remains subject to Martínez completing his medical and other formalities, with Chelsea expected to finalise the deal before the Premier League transfer window closes on September 1.
