Police operatives from the Azikiwe Police Division were called to the scene after the situation became tense and intervened to restore calm.
The deceased’s elder brother, Obomate, said the family received news of Charles’ death around 5am on Thursday.
According to him, the family was told that Charles had fallen from the balcony of a two-storey building behind the hotel. However, he said they found no evidence at the scene to support the claim.
Obomate alleged that the area showed signs of a possible struggle, including scattered items and traces of blood. He added that a doctor who examined Charles’ body reportedly suspected that the injuries were inconsistent with a simple fall.
The family has consequently called for a thorough investigation and access to the hotel’s CCTV footage.
Following the incident, police sealed the hotel and directed guests and other occupants to vacate the premises, reportedly to preserve potential evidence and prevent further escalation.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, confirmed that the police had sealed the facility and arrested about five people, including individuals who were with the deceased on the night of the incident and some hotel staff.
Agabe said the deceased was initially taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead, before his family and friends returned with his remains to the hotel seeking clarification.
She added that the investigation was ongoing to determine the immediate and remote causes of the death.
The deceased’s remains have since been removed and deposited at an undisclosed mortuary by the police.
