EX-OGUN COUNCILLORS DEMAND OUTSTANDING SEVERANCE PAYMENTS FROM ABIODUN

Former councillors and other political office holders who served in Ogun State’s local governments between 2021 and 2024 have appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to approve and release their outstanding severance benefits.
The former office holders said the prolonged delay in payment had negatively affected their welfare, with some struggling to meet basic needs and medical expenses.
They claimed that about 25 of their former colleagues had died, allegedly due to their inability to afford adequate healthcare.

The ex-councillors made the appeal on Thursday in Ijebu-Ode during the quarterly rotational meeting of the Ogun State Councilors Forum, 2021–2024, Ogun East Senatorial Chapter.
Speaking on behalf of the forum, the Leader of the Legislative Council of Ijebu North Local Government, Abass Olanrewaju, said their demand was not intended to confront the state government but to seek intervention over what they described as their lawful entitlements.
Olanrewaju said the group had previously explored several channels, including communicating with relevant authorities and stakeholders, but had yet to receive a satisfactory resolution.
He appealed to President Bola Tinubu, the national and state leadership of the All Progressives Congress, and the party’s Ogun State governorship candidate, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, to intervene and persuade Governor Abiodun to release the outstanding payments.
According to him, the former political office holders remain loyal members of the APC and are seeking a peaceful resolution to the matter.
Olanrewaju also expressed concern over the health challenges facing some former officials, saying at least two former local government secretaries were reportedly battling serious medical conditions.
He stressed that the delayed payments were affecting families and dependants, adding that the funds would help beneficiaries settle medical bills, support their families, educate their children and restart businesses.
The forum leader further warned that the continued non-payment of the statutory benefits was creating disaffection among party members and could negatively affect the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections if the matter remained unresolved.
