Nigerian military forces have successfully repelled an attempted attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram fighters on troop positions in Gajigana, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident was disclosed in a post on Friday by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, via his X account.

According to the report, the attack took place late on June 3 when a large number of terrorists riding motorcycles attempted to overrun a Forward Operating Base after breaching defensive positions in the area.

Troops engaged the assailants in a sustained gun battle, halting their advance and inflicting casualties, while coordinated aerial surveillance and strike support disrupted their movement routes.

During the clash, the attackers were seen operating in dispersed motorcycle formations, with about 15 riders scattering in different directions under heavy fire from troops.

One of the fleeing terrorists was neutralised during the exchange, while others escaped into surrounding terrain.

Following the encounter, troops launched clearance and pursuit operations along suspected withdrawal routes, recovering one motorcycle and ammunition rounds believed to have been abandoned during the retreat.

In a related development, military authorities have intensified air and ground patrols across key flashpoints in the North-East, including strategic corridors in Borno State.

The enhanced operations cover routes linking Auno, Benisheikh, Ngamdu, Konduga, Mafa, and Maiduguri metropolis, as well as areas around Alau Dam and other identified infiltration routes, following intelligence reports of possible regrouping by insurgent elements.

Authorities said the ongoing operations are part of sustained counter-insurgency efforts aimed at weakening terrorist capabilities and preventing further attacks on both military and civilian targets in the region.
