TRUMP TARGETS BIRTH TOURISM WITH NEW EXECUTIVE ORDER

US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at curbing birthright citizenship by targeting foreigners who enter the United States on tourist visas primarily to give birth.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump argued that birthright citizenship had been abused, saying the policy had been turned into “a joke.”
The move marks another attempt by the president to restrict automatic citizenship for children born in the United States, following the US Supreme Court’s rejection of a similar effort in late June.
Describing the court’s decision as “very unfortunate,” Trump said his administration was making adjustments because the current system was unfair.
Last year, Trump signed an executive order seeking to deny automatic US citizenship to children born to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas.
However, lower courts blocked the measure, ruling that it violated the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to nearly everyone born on American soil.
The Supreme Court upheld those rulings in a majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts and supported by two other conservative justices as well as the court’s three liberal justices.
Trump’s renewed push to limit birthright citizenship forms part of his broader immigration agenda, which includes deporting millions of undocumented migrants and ending deportation protections for nationals of more than a dozen countries.
The 14th Amendment states that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”
The constitutional provision does not apply to individuals who are not subject to US jurisdiction, such as the children of foreign diplomats.
Under existing US immigration law, consular officers already have the authority to deny visa applications if they believe an applicant’s primary reason for travelling to the United States is to give birth.
