US SET TO CHARGE MADURO, WIFE OVER ALLEGED TORTURE OF AMERICANS

Agency Report
US prosecutors are expected to file new charges against ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, over the alleged torture of Americans detained in Venezuelan government custody, CNN reported on Wednesday.
The reported charges are linked to the alleged wrongful detention of more than a dozen US citizens in Venezuela during Maduro’s administration.
Maduro and Flores are already facing criminal charges in the United States after they were arrested during a US military operation at their Caracas compound in January.

According to CNN, citing people familiar with the investigation, prosecutors are also considering charges against several other individuals allegedly involved in the torture of American detainees.
The new charges could be announced as early as Thursday, the report said. US prosecutors did not immediately comment when contacted by AFP.
Maduro and Flores are scheduled to stand trial in New York next June and are currently being held at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn.
US prosecutors accuse Maduro of using his political power to facilitate and protect drug trafficking operations, alleging that he worked with criminal cartels to transport large quantities of cocaine into the United States.
Maduro has pleaded not guilty to four charges, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices.
Flores has also pleaded not guilty to three charges: conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices.
Flores is expected in court on Thursday for a hearing on her request to be released from custody and placed under house arrest due to reported heart-related health concerns.
