WAEC: 38.5% OF CANDIDATES FAIL FIVE CORE SUBJECTS

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that 61.54 per cent of candidates who sat the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, while 38.46 per cent did not meet the benchmark.

WAEC also withheld the results of candidates sponsored by state governments that are yet to settle outstanding debts owed to the examination body.

Announcing the results in Lagos, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said 1,959,668 candidates registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 sat for the CBT-based examination held between April 24 and June 19, 2026.

According to him, 1,834,695 candidates (94.05%) had their results released, while 116,031 (5.95%) are still being processed due to unresolved issues. He assured affected candidates that the outstanding results would be released once the issues are resolved.

Dangut explained that candidates sponsored by indebted state governments would not be able to access their results until the outstanding payments are made.

He added that candidates whose results have been released can check them online within 12 hours and apply for their digital certificates, which will be available within 48 hours.

On examination malpractice, WAEC disclosed that the results of 167,486 candidates (8.59%) were withheld over alleged involvement in various forms of malpractice. The cases are currently under investigation, while some supervisors, invigilators, and other offenders have already been sanctioned.
