Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, has criticised the treatment of the Portugal captain, saying the country’s national team and media owe the football star greater respect.

According to Bild, Aveiro spoke out after Ronaldo unexpectedly left Portugal’s national team training camp in Denmark.

In a social media post, she wrote: “Ronaldo deserves more respect. The national team needs a better structure. The Portuguese media needs to be more professional and less speculative.”

She also took aim at the Portuguese public, writing: “As for the Portuguese people, well… they don’t deserve to have the best in anything. We are jealous, contemptuous, and ignorant, and we deserve to return to the mediocre era of Portuguese football before Ronaldo emerged. Thank you for everything, Ronaldo! You deserved more!”

Aveiro captioned the post: “Everything has been said.”

Ronaldo had earlier confirmed his departure from the national team camp after missing training, saying the decision followed comments made by head coach Jorge Jesus and a conversation between Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

“After the national team coach held a press conference and spoke with the Portuguese Football Federation president, I decided to leave the national team training camp,” Ronaldo wrote.

He added: “In due course, I will explain to all Portuguese people the true reasons that led me to leave the national team. I have always been fully committed to this national team.”

The controversy followed Jesus’ decision to leave Ronaldo out of Portugal’s starting XI for the 2-1 victory over Norway. The coach subsequently indicated that Ronaldo would also not start against Denmark, describing the decision as part of a pre-planned lineup and insisting there was no conflict between them.

Aveiro’s comments have added another layer to the growing controversy surrounding Ronaldo’s status with the Portuguese national team.
