‘YOUR AFROBEAT CLAIMS ARE WRONG’ – BANKULLI FIRES AT PAULO OKOYE

Grammy-nominated singer and music executive, Abisagboola Oluseun Yeezuz, popularly known as Bankulli, has criticised celebrity show promoter Paulo Okoye over his claim that Afrobeats is “dead or in a coma.”
Paulo Okoye had sparked debate after suggesting that the genre was losing momentum, arguing that soaring performance fees had made it difficult for promoters, brands and corporate organisations to book top Nigerian artistes.
Responding in a lengthy Instagram post on Wednesday, Bankulli dismissed the claim as “faulty,” insisting that Afrobeats remains strong and vibrant. He argued that the challenges faced by some promoters in booking high-profile artistes should not be interpreted as a decline in the genre.
According to Bankulli, the music industry is simply experiencing a shift, with audiences embracing a wider range of sounds, while many artistes continue to thrive financially.
To support his position, the music executive shared videos from concerts and events he had participated in over the past two months, maintaining that both Afrobeats and related genres remain commercially successful.
He suggested that the real issue was the changing pricing structure of Nigerian artistes, noting that while some performers may have priced themselves beyond the reach of certain promoters, there are many other talented acts with strong fan bases capable of delivering successful shows.
Bankulli urged industry stakeholders not to mistake the evolving music landscape for the decline of Afrobeats, stressing that the genre continues to enjoy global success and strong market demand.
