YouTube is updating its Shorts recommendation system to reduce the visibility of channels that primarily re-upload videos created by other users without adding substantial original content.

The video-sharing platform said the change is designed to give original creators greater opportunities to reach audiences while improving the quality of videos recommended on Shorts.

According to YouTube, its recommendation system analyses billions of signals, including users’ viewing history, interests and engagement, to determine the content most relevant to individual viewers.

“To improve the Shorts experience for everyone, we’re updating our recommendation systems to further prioritise original content and reduce the reach of content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything of your own,” the company said.

YouTube explained that channels focused mainly on aggregating or re-uploading videos without making significant creative changes could experience reduced distribution on the Shorts feed.

“Channels identified as primarily aggregating or re-uploading other creators’ videos without significant changes will likely see less distribution within the Shorts feed,” it said.

The change is expected to particularly affect “clipper” channels, which have become increasingly popular on YouTube and other social media platforms.

These channels typically extract portions of podcasts, interviews, livestreams and other long-form content and republish them as short videos for their audiences.

However, YouTube clarified that creators can continue using clips from other people’s content as long as they add meaningful original elements.

“If you use clips from another creator, make sure you’re adding real value through your own original commentary, unique edits, or storytelling,” the platform said.

The company also cautioned creators against relying on minor technical adjustments or template-based edits simply to make reused content appear original.

It advised creators to focus instead on adding their own voice, storytelling and distinct perspective to content featuring material from other creators.

YouTube stressed that the update does not amount to a ban on clipping or repurposing other creators’ content. Rather, it changes how such videos are ranked and distributed by the Shorts recommendation system.

The platform said the move builds on its existing policies and is intended to give creators producing original content a stronger opportunity to grow.

“This update to our recommendation systems delivers a better experience for viewers while ensuring creators publishing original content have the best chance to grow and succeed,” YouTube said.

The changes could prompt creators who depend heavily on re-uploaded material to rethink their Shorts strategies by incorporating more original commentary, storytelling, editing and creative input into videos featuring content from other sources.
