About 5,000 All Progressives Congress (APC) members have switched to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Northern Senatorial District, fueling the ongoing war for Cross River state’s soul.

According to information obtained by journalists, the defectors include former APC ward and chapter officers, women leaders, and Hausa community leaders in Ogoja, Yala, Bekwarra, Obanliku, and Obudu, as well as LP candidates in the most recent elections for the federal seat representing Ogoja/Yala.

The Vice Chairman of the PDP Northern Senatorial District, Chief Austine Edibe, welcomed the defectors on Saturday at TTC field in Igoli-Ogoja and praised them for their fortitude in re-joining the party at such a crucial time.

He urged them to return to their respective wards and strive for the PDP’s success in 2023, noting that the wards with the highest vote totals would be rewarded with additional democratic dividends.

Sen. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, who also welcomed the defectors, gave them advice to stay steady and loyal to the party leadership in their various wards, and assured them that there would be additional empowerment programs to accommodate them.

In order to be prepared for the upcoming struggle, Jarigbe advised the defectors to fasten their belts and reject any inducements.
Efiok Cobham, a former deputy governor, had earlier urged the defectors to join “operation vote APC out” and get their PVCs ready to restore the PDP.

Some of the defectors stated that they were eager to work for the PDP and that “we have come full circle.”

Agim Joseph Agim, one of the defectors and a former chapter treasurer of the APC in Obudu, claimed they returned to the PDP out of affection for Sen. Jarigbe and to take part in the party’s success story before the 2023 election.

Ushie James Odey, a former APC secretary who served in Bekwarra’s Ukpah ward, responded, saying: “We worked for the APC for seven years, but I received neither anything nor any kind of empowerment. I have made the decision to defect to PDP, where I will receive human therapy.

“I came across roughly 300 APC members,” John Brown Ugbada of Yala claimed. To work for the PDP to reposition Yala local government area, we are rejoining them.

For the most recent Yala/Ogoja federal constituency by-election, Dominic Ebi, a former LP candidate, said: “I have returned to PDP because it is a family that has a reward system.”
