SOCIAL MEDIA DIVIDED OVER IBOM AIR–PASSENGER CLASH THAT LED TO ARREST AND REMAND

The clash between Ibom Air and a passenger, Comfort Emmanson who was on Monday charged to court and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting airline officials has sparked intense debate across social media platforms.

Viral videos showed Emmanson confronting flight attendants and airport security, while another clip recorded by her appeared to capture her asking to be allowed to disembark, fuelling disputes over whether the incident was mishandled.

Ibom Air alleged the confrontation began before take-off in Uyo when Emmanson refused to switch off her mobile phone in line with aviation safety rules, later assaulting a purser upon arrival in Lagos, thereby endangering passengers, crew, and the aircraft.

However, some online commentators have accused the airline’s crew of excessive force, with criticism over the fact that the passenger’s breast was exposed during the scuffle. Others defended the airline, saying Emmanson escalated the situation and assaulted staff.

From Facebook to Twitter, Nigerians have been sharply divided. Self-identified eyewitness, Tunde Ibrahim, alleged the crew blocked the passenger from disembarking despite her claim that her phone was on flight mode. Another user, Mazi Nathan, described both the passenger’s behaviour as unruly and the airline’s handling as “unprofessional and degrading,” suggesting she could sue for damages.

While some users such as The Truth Speaker insisted that violating flight protocols justified aggressive removal, others, like Winning Grace, argued the air hostess who blocked her exit should also face sanctions. Several commenters linked the incident to last week’s controversy involving a popular Fuji musician at the airport, raising concerns about consistency in enforcement.

The heated exchanges reflect broader public frustration with both passenger conduct and airline response in Nigeria’s aviation sector, with many calling for clearer rules, better training, and more professional conflict resolution onboard flights.
