GOVERNOR SULE SEEKS FCT COLLABORATION TO FAST-TRACK TRIAL OF INMATES AFTER KEFFI JAILBREAK

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has expressed the state government’s readiness to partner with relevant authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to expedite the prosecution of inmates awaiting trial at the Keffi Medium Custodial Centre.
Governor Sule made this known on Wednesday during a visit to the facility, following Tuesday’s jailbreak in which 16 inmates escaped.
While interacting with officials and inmates, the governor noted that a significant number of inmates awaiting trial had cases pending before FCT courts. He pledged that the government would explore all avenues to accelerate trials in order to reduce congestion at the centre.
Addressing the inmates, Governor Sule urged them to remain law-abiding and of good behaviour. He also ordered the immediate supply of 500 mattresses to improve living conditions, after observing that many inmates were sleeping on bare floors.

The governor commended officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service and other security agencies for swiftly re-arresting some of the escapees. He further called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals to security agencies.
According to the Nigerian Correctional Service spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, the jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after inmates overpowered personnel on duty. Five officers sustained injuries, with two in serious condition and receiving urgent medical care. Seven escapees have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining nine.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, who also visited the facility, ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and warned that any staff member found complicit would face disciplinary action.
