A head-on collision involving a truck and a commercial tricycle on the Yenagoa/Amassoma Road in Bayelsa State has resulted in the fatalities of two students from Niger Delta University, Amassoma. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, also left several other passengers of the ill-fated tricycle with severe injuries.

Local residents attributed the accident to a lack of road signage and excessive speed by drivers, as the crash occurred on a curve in the road. The truck approached the bend at a high velocity, lost control, and collided with the tricycle at full speed, causing significant destruction. A vendor, Godspower Okilo, mention on Thursday that the truck driver was driving recklessly, and by the time he became aware of the impending danger, it was already too late.

He remarked, “The tricycle had no opportunity to evade the peril because the truck was already too close. We have been expressing concerns regarding negligent truck drivers on this road for years, but no improvements have been made. ”

“The impact was so severe that the tricycle was rendered unrecognizable. Good Samaritans rushed to the site, rescuing survivors from the debris and transporting the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa. The bodies of the deceased were subsequently taken to a nearby morgue.

This incident has rekindled demands for more stringent traffic enforcement; the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the State Police Command should enhance patrols, implement speed bumps, and conduct regular safety inspections on heavy vehicles. ”

Another member of the community, Mrs. Ebike Ekain, stated that if the relevant authorities fail to take action now, more lives may be lost to accidents in the near future. The Yenagoa/Amassoma Road is undeniably the most perilous route in Bayelsa State due to the frequency of accidents occurring each year. The reconstruction of the segment stretching from the Etegwe Roundabout to Tombia Community has resulted in multiple turns, which motorists frequently overlook as they tend to drive at dangerous speeds.

The Federal Road Safety Commission usually deploys an ambulance to the roadway, stationed at Tombia Community and occasionally at the roundabout leading to Agudama-Ekpetiama Community. A representative for the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Muhammad, who verified the accident, indicated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident. “Yes, an accident occurred there, and we are examining the factors leading to the accident,” he confirmed.
